Rüsselsheim. It’s that time of year again: in the night from October 26 to 27, the clocks will go back one hour. For many drivers, this means that their morning and evening commutes will be in darkness from now on. But Opel drivers are not worried – their Corsa, Corsa-e, Astra and Insignia cars are ideally equipped for driving in the dark with IntelliLux LED® matrix light. After the compact segment, the German brand is now bringing adaptive, glare-free, full LED light to the small car class, and thus continues to democratize technology that is otherwise only available in expensive vehicles.
Full LED headlamps with numerous automatic functions are also used by the Grandland X and Mokka X. In addition, energy-saving LED headlamps, which help to further reduce CO2 emissions, are optionally available on the Astra, Corsa and Crossland X.
The current IntelliLux LED® matrix light is far superior to xenon or conventional systems because it is more precise and more powerful. The clever headlamps make driving in darkness safer and more comfortable. As soon as the car leaves urban surroundings, the matrix headlamps switch on main-beam automatically and continuously adapt the range and distribution of the light cone, regardless of whether the Corsa, Astra or Insignia is on the motorway, country roads or driving through a curve. Depending on the model, eight, 16 or 32 LED segments rapidly and automatically adapt to the prevailing traffic situation. Individual LEDs switch off in milliseconds, turning night into day without glare for oncoming traffic.
LED matrix light has a range of up to 400 metres – a big advantage at this time of year, especially when wild animals cross the road; they can be seen sooner, which gives the driver more time to react.
The right light for every situation
Opel offers advanced lighting not only in the Insignia, Astra and Corsa, but also in other market segments. The Grandland X and Mokka X, for example, feature camera-based, adaptive AFL LED technology. The LED headlamps control the light distribution and provide improved functionality compared to previous lighting systems. Thanks to the automatic main beam, the driver does not need to switch it on and off manually to prevent glare for other road users. AFL LED headlamps feature up to eight individual functions – light for town, country roads, motorways, cornering, turning and parking, plus main beam assist and automatic dipping.
Highest efficiency and light output
In order to further reduce CO2 emissions, Opel is also offering highly efficient LED headlamps on the new Astra and the new Corsa. Each headlamp only consumes between 13 and 14 Watt on dipped beam, an energy saving of more than 80 per cent compared with halogen. Thanks to a special reflector technology, LED headlamps also turn night into day.
On average, the LED headlamps on the entry-level Corsa alone save 1.3 grams of CO2 per kilometre (according to NEDC). With the petrol turbo engine it is 1.38 g/km and 1.23 g/km with the diesel (fuel consumption NEDC1: urban 5.5-3.7 l/100km, extra-urban 4.2-2.9 l/100km, combined 4.7-3.2 l/100km, 106-85g/km CO2; fuel consumption WLTP2 combined: 6.2-4.0 l/100km, 140-105g/km CO2).
The Astra five-door saves 1.26 g/km CO2 (according to NEDC). The petrol turbo scores with 1.34 g/km CO2, the diesel with 1.19 (fuel consumption NEDC1: urban 6.3-3.9 l/100 km, extra-urban 4.3-3.1 l/100 km, combined 5.1-3.4 l/100 km, 116-90 g/km CO2; fuel consumption WLTP2 combined: 6.0-4.3, 138-112 g/km CO2).
The Crossland X with petrol engine saves 1.28 g/km CO2 (NEDC), 1.37 g/km with petrol turbo and 1.21 g/km with diesel (fuel consumption NEDC1: urban 5.9-4.4 l/100km, extra-urban 4.5-3.6 l/100km, combined 5.0-4.0 l/100km, 114-104 g/km CO2; fuel consumption WLTP2: combined 6.7-4.7 l/100km, 152-123 g/km CO2).
